Sega stated it hopes to duplicate its huge success with other popular video games in its library following the release of its highly successful big-screen Sonic the Hedgehog game franchise.
Speaking with CNBC on Tuesday at the Web Summit digital conference in Libson, Portugal, Shuji Utsumi, the chief operating officer of Sega, revealed that the business is considering releasing more of its profitable intellectual property on other channels, such as video games and the Roblox platform.
Utsumi made reference to the box office triumph of the Sonic the Hedgehog adaptions when she told CNBC’s Arjun Kharpal that “Sonic is reviving.”
Even after fans initially reacted negatively to Sega’s first public release of the game due to a subpar portrayal of the legendary character, Sonic the Hedgehog managed to earn $306.8 million at the box office, turning it into a blockbuster success for the franchise.
With $405.4 million earned at the box office, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 performed even better.
Sega is now trying to replicate that kind of success in other game adaptations. According to Utsumi, the corporation is exploring several avenues to expand the reach of its intellectual property beyond film.
One possible way to achieve this would be to introduce a Sonic-like experience to the Roblox gaming platform, where millions of users come together to create games and interact with one another in large online and mobile communities.
The business recently completed the 706-million-euro ($767.9 million) acquisition of Rovio, the firm behind the Angry Birds mobile game.
Utsumi declared, “We have other major IPs.” “We also have other classic IPs in mind to revive.”
