Stocks fell further on Tuesday, as a credit rating agency downgrading of the banking sector rekindled an August selloff.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 158.64 points, or 0.45%, to settle at 35,314.49. The index fell 465 points at the session lows.
The S&P 500 fell 0.42% to 4,499.38, increasing the index’s month-to-date loss to nearly 2%. The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.79% to 13,884.32, reducing its August loss to 3.2%.
Tuesday was the S&P 500’s and Nasdaq’s fifth negative session in a row. Both were down more than 1% at session lows. Despite the fact that all three indices closed off their session lows, none of them ever broke into positive territory.
