Following the Israel-Hamas war, children are participating in Roblox demonstrations in support of Palestine; thus far, over 275,000 people have visited a pro-Palestine virtual protest.
Social media videos and earlier livestreams of at least one event featured people marching on digital brick streets decorated with Palestinian flags and banners reading “Solidarity Untukmu Palestine,” which, according to Google Translate, also includes a Malay phrase that means “Solidarity for you, Palestine.” Malaysia has hosted pro-Palestine demonstrations, and Anwar Ibrahim, the prime minister of the nation, recently denounced Israel’s airstrikes in the Gaza Strip.
Roblox informed CNBC that the number of visits may include several visits by a single individual. CNBC verified the signage by logging into the virtual protest area, which has received over 275,000 visits to far. Participants were given the option to virtually raise the Malaysian flag, the Palestinian flag, or no flag at all.
Data from Roblox for December 2022 shows that about 45% of users are 12 years of age or younger, while 60% of users are 16 years of age or younger. Based on the same corporate survey, only 17% of customers are 25 years of age or older. Parents appeared to be stating in social media comments that CNBC saw that their daughters and sons had either joined or intended to join the Roblox experience.
