For years, makers of air taxis have promoted visions of science fiction like flying cars becoming a reality.
As this technology edges closer to mainstream deployment, legal disputes are beginning to cast a shadow over the industry’s progress.
Last year, Joby Aviation filed a lawsuit against Archer, accusing its rival of corporate espionage and of using stolen information to interfere with a deal involving a real estate developer.
In turn, Archer responded with claims that Joby concealed links to China and engaged in a deliberate, years long scheme to defraud the U.S. government.
Archer alleged that Joby even went as far as misclassifying Chinese aircraft parts as everyday consumer goods, such as hair clips and socks, to evade regulatory oversight.
