Following President Donald Trump’s weekend warning of imposing heavy tariffs on additional nations, stocks were largely down Monday.
However, investors managed to contain losses by placing bets that the taxes would eventually be lowered.
Investors were upbeat about the second-quarter results season, which begins this week.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.3%, or 119 points, in trading. The Nasdaq Composite stayed close to the flatline, while the S&P 500 fell 0.1%.
