U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed a willingness to negotiate a nuclear deal with Iran, just a day after reimposing a “maximum pressure” campaign on the Islamic Republic.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump called for immediate work to begin on a “Verified Nuclear Peace Agreement,” which he believes would allow Iran to “peacefully grow and prosper.” The U.S. leader distanced himself from recent reports suggesting that the U.S. and Israel are cooperating to launch a military strike against Iran, describing them as exaggerated.
The development comes on the heels of Trump’s decision to reimpose the maximum pressure campaign on Iran, as outlined in a memorandum signed by the President. This move includes a directive to the Secretaries of State and Treasury to implement a strategy aimed at eliminating Iran’s oil exports to zero, including to its largest buyer, China.
In 2018, Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear deal negotiated by former President Barack Obama. Trump’s current stance suggests a shift in his approach to Iran, although the exact nature of his proposal remains unclear.
