On Wednesday, Vitalik Buterin, one of the co-creators of Ethereum, issued a warning against selecting political candidates purely on the basis of their assertion that they support cryptocurrency.
Even Putin and the Russian government have “expressed willingness to become ‘open to crypto,'” buterin cautioned in a blog post that “the game of politics is much more complicated than just ‘who wins the next election’, and there are a lot of levers that your words and actions affect.”
However, a day after venture capitalists Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz informed Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) staff members that they intended to contribute significantly to political action committees backing Donald Trump’s campaign, Buterin’s post coincides with the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where Trump has positioned himself as the pro-crypto presidential candidate.
One of the most well-funded PACs this election cycle is Fairshake, a super PAC supported by the biggest names in cryptocurrency.
Just four businesses—Jump Crypto, Coinbase, Andreesen Horowitz, and Ripple—have contributed a total of $160 million, or 94% of the total capital raised.
