Dow Futures Marginally Increase as the Average Hits a New Annual High

As the Dow Jones Industrial Average had its strongest month in over a year and set a new record for 2023, stock futures saw mixed trading on Friday morning.

Nasdaq-100 and S&P 500 futures were virtually unchanged, while futures linked to the 30-stock index increased by 49 points, or 0.1%, to slightly extend gains.

On Friday, traders were anticipating the words of Jerome Powell, the chair of the Federal Reserve. At 11 a.m. ET at Spelman College, Powell will be speaking in a fireside chat. Dealers started to think the Fed was done hiking rates and might begin lowering them in the first half of next year, which contributed to November’s substantial surge.

In premarket trade, Disney’s stock increased by less than 1% on the company’s dividend reinstatement. A robust quarter’s earnings caused Ulta Beauty to soar by about 12%.

The quiet changes on Friday follow an incredible conclusion to a massive rally in November. In order to reach its new high of 35,950.89, which it reached in August 2023, the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 520 points, or 1.47%, higher. Overnight, the S&P 500 increased by 0.4%, while the Nasdaq Composite fell by roughly 0.2%.

A three-month losing trend was ended by stocks on Thursday, as they concluded a record November. It was the best monthly performance for the S&P and Nasdaq since July 2022, with gains of 8.9% and 10.7%, respectively. Its greatest month since October 2022 saw an 8.8% increase in the Dow.

The Dow is on course to record its fifth straight winning week, marking the first time in more than two years for both the S&P and Dow are poised for a positive week. A four-week winning streak is expected to end on the Nasdaq, which is down roughly 0.2% week to date.

Wall Street insiders are encouraging investors to exercise caution through year-end into 2024, notwithstanding Thursday’s significant market gain and November’s positive market mood.

As we start the new year, Chris Harvey of Wells Fargo told CNBC’s “Closing Bell” that “everyone’s pretty happy and it’s time for either a correction or some form of downturn.”
