Five Things to Know on Wednesday Before the Stock Market Starts

1. ‘A cautious market’

The start of 2024 has been marked by a lack of momentum in the stock market, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average has experienced a decline of nearly 0.5% in the first six trading days of the year.

2. Crypto investors face uncertainty

Crypto investors experienced a rollercoaster ride as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) initially created enthusiasm by announcing the approval of bitcoin ETFs for trading. However, it was later revealed that the SEC’s Twitter account, known as X, had been compromised, leaving investors disappointed.

3. Surge in home prices

The upward trajectory of home prices continues, driven partly by falling mortgage rates that have stimulated demand. However, limited supply remains a challenge, resulting in the typical issue of supply and demand imbalance.

4. Trump’s legal battle

Former President Donald Trump and his legal team appeared in court to argue that immunity from prosecution applies to actions taken while in office. However, doubts were raised by a panel of three federal appellate judges, questioning Trump’s claim that only a Senate conviction following impeachment can permit criminal prosecution for official acts.

5. Lunar landing setback

Astrobotic, a U.S. lunar company, had to abandon its plans for a soft moon landing, which would have been the country’s first in over 50 years. Despite the successful launch of the Peregrine moon lander during United Launch Alliance’s inaugural Vulcan rocket mission, the landing did not proceed as planned.
