Legislators who are worried about child abuse and safety on social media platforms will question Mark Zuckerberg, Linda Yaccarino, Evan Spiegel, and other prominent social media executives on Wednesday.
At a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing regarding protecting children on their respective platforms, the three CEOs—who oversee Meta, X (previously known as Twitter), and Snap, respectively—along with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew and Discord CEO Jason Citron, are slated to testify in Washington.
Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers have attacked the businesses for not doing enough to stop what some have dubbed a “plague of online child sexual exploitation” on social media platforms. The session aims to provide Congressmen with information that they can use to draft legislation that would force the companies to take further steps to safeguard youngsters using their platforms.
Sens. Dick Durbin, D-Illino, chairman of the committee, and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., ranking member, said in November that they had subpoenaed Yaccarino, Spiegel, and Citron to testify at the hearing.
