While Traders Wait for the Fed to Announce its Rate Policy, Stock Futures Decline

U.S. stock futures experienced a decline on Wednesday following a day of gains for the major stock market averages. Investors were eagerly awaiting the Federal Reserve’s latest policy decision.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were down 40 points, or 0.1%, while S&P 500 futures also dipped by 0.1%. Nasdaq 100 futures remained relatively flat.

The Federal Reserve is widely expected to maintain interest rates at their current levels following the conclusion of its two-day policy meeting on Wednesday. However, market participants will closely analyze the dot plot for clues about the frequency and timing of potential rate cuts, with many predicting that the central bank may initiate rate reductions starting in June.

Concerns have emerged that recent reports indicating high inflation levels could lead to fewer rate cuts than what the market has been anticipating. Liz Ann Sonders commented, “The dot plot may suggest that another reduction has been taken from what were initially expected to be three rate cuts.

The critical question is when these expectations will impact the market, especially considering the ongoing resilience of the market. Ultimately, it is not just about how the Fed will respond, but also about the sustainability of the economic growth trajectory.”
