The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed marginally down on Thursday, after briefly exceeding 40,000 for the first time.
The blue-chip average reached a high of 40,051.05 on the day, capping off a bull market that began in October 2022.
The index had approached 40,000 early this year before a minor April reversal on concerns about increasing interest rates brought it back down.
The surge was revived in May by solid earnings and low inflation readings.
The 30-stock Dow closed at 39,869.38, down 38.62 points, or 0.1%, for the day. The S&P 500 dropped 0.21% to 5,297.10. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.26% on the day, closing at 16,698.32.
