As investors processed new economic data that suggested inflation was slowing down as well as better-than-expected consumer mood data, U.S. stocks fell slightly on Friday.
Traders concluded 2024 with a successful first half. The Nasdaq Composite finished lower by 0.71% at 17,732.60, while the S&P 500 was down 0.41% at 5,460.48.
Before retreating later in the session, the two averages reached fresh all-time highs inside the day.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the day at 39,118.86, down 45.20 points, or 0.12%.
