Abilene, a town of 125,000 people, is located in the centre of West Texas, just off of Interstate 20.
The little outpost, which was formerly a resting place on a cross-country cattle track during the American Old West era, is now venturing into the rapidly growing field of artificial intelligence.
A multibillion dollar agreement to construct a 200 megawatt data centre outside of Abilene was announced on Thursday morning by the Denver-based Crusoe Energy Systems and the Houston-based tech company Lancium.
The facility will be used to “meet the unique needs of AI companies,” including enabling advanced cloud computing for uses like medical research and aircraft design. This is the initial stage of a planned 1.2 gigawatt expansion.
