Agreeing to Allow the U.S. AI Safety Institute to Test and Assess New Models, OpenAI and Anthropic

Due to growing industry worries about safety and ethics in AI, the two most highly valued artificial intelligence startups, OpenAI and Anthropic, have decided to allow the U.S. AI Safety Institute test their new models before making them available to the general public.

News statement from the institute, which is situated within the Department of Commerce at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), it would have “access to major new models from each company prior to and following their public release.”

The organisation was founded in October 2023, following the issuance of the first-ever executive order on artificial intelligence by the Biden-Harris administration.

This order mandated the creation of new safety evaluations, guidelines for fairness and civil rights, and studies on the effects of AI on the labour market.
