After Making Large Commitments in the Past, Tech Giants Like Google and Meta Reduced their DEI Programmes in 2023

Following the tragic murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police in 2020, Google, like many other tech companies, took action to establish new initiatives that aimed to provide support for its Black employees. The objective, as stated by CEO Sundar Pichai, was to foster lasting equity within Google’s Black+ community, while also ensuring that their products and programs serve as valuable resources during critical moments for Black users.

To fulfill these commitments, Google publicly pledged to enhance the representation of underrepresented groups in leadership positions by 30% before 2025. Additionally, they set a goal to more than double the number of Black employees in roles below senior levels within the same timeframe, actively addressing representation challenges in hiring, retention, and promotions. Moreover, Google recognized the importance of prioritizing the mental and physical well-being of their Black employees, aiming to establish comprehensive support in this aspect as well.
