Millions of people were first introduced to Bluesky during a high-profile U.S. presidential election.
It has added 8.7 million members since Election Day, demonstrating the need of consumers for an alternative to Meta’s Threads and Elon Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter.
And although while Bluesky is still dwarfed by these bigger social media sites, the startup has more than 22 million subscribers and isn’t slowing down.
Bluesky has been seeing spikes in user growth for over a year, despite the fact that its recent jump may look abrupt to CNBC.
In September, Bluesky reported that 2 million people visited the service the week after X was briefly suspended by the Brazilian Supreme Court for not hiring a local attorney and for not adhering to the nation’s content-moderation regulations.
Bluesky had previously seen a spike in July 2023 when X, which was still known as Twitter at the time, temporarily restricted the daily limit on the number of postings users could view.
