Google and Apple Collaborate to Combat Stalking Via Location Trackers

On Monday, Apple and Google revealed that upgraded iPhones and Android phones will notify users when a wireless location tracking device is close by. This is done in case the user wishes to cease being watched and wasn’t aware they were being followed.

With this move, the two major platforms are attempting to address the drawbacks of wireless trackers, like Apple’s AirTag, which can be helpful in locating misplaced or stolen items by showing their location on a map but can also be used by criminals to follow individuals.

A notification informing the user that a Bluetooth tracker has been “found moving with them” will appear on recent Android and iPhone devices. Following that, users may get instructions on how to disable the tracker and have it play a sound to make it easier to locate.
