China Advances in AI Development, but the U.S. Maintains a Significant Edge

Earlier this week, Clément Delangue, CEO of the startup Hugging Face which recently experienced a cyber attack involving OpenAI’s models made a somewhat controversial statement suggesting that China is gaining the upper hand in the AI race.

He noted that China is currently leading in open models and expressed the possibility that they could soon dominate at the frontier level as well, given the rapid pace of development.

While access to the latest AI computing power remains a challenge for China due to restrictions imposed by the U.S. to limit its access Chinese AI models are increasingly narrowing the performance gap with leading U.S. systems.

For instance, Beijing-based Moonshot’s Kimi K3, launched in July, has shown impressive progress in benchmarks, coming close to or surpassing some models from companies like Anthropic and OpenAI. As capabilities continue to improve, more Western companies are adopting Chinese AI models.
