On Tuesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average experienced a decline following its recent achievement of surpassing 38,000 for the first time. The downturn was influenced by a 6% drop in 3M, impacted by disappointing quarterly guidance. Additionally, GE saw a 1% decrease.
Conversely, United Airlines saw a notable rise of over 6% after reporting robust fourth-quarter results. Despite this positive outcome, the airline anticipates a first-quarter loss due to the grounding of Boeing 737 Max 9 airplanes, the same model involved in the recent Alaska Airlines emergency.
Other airline operators followed suit with gains, including American Airlines with a more than 3% increase, and Southwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Alaska Air Group, all advancing over 2%.
Monday marked a significant trading session, as the Dow Jones advanced over 100 points (0.4%), setting a new record by closing above 38,000 for the first time. The broader S&P 500 rose 0.2%, reaching a new all-time high, while the Nasdaq Composite, focused on technology, gained 0.3%.
