Meta’s Oversight Board has concluded that a Facebook video incorrectly implying that U.S. President Joe Biden is a pedophile does not breach the company’s existing regulations. However, the board has criticized these rules as “incoherent” and overly concentrated on AI-generated material.
Despite being financially backed by Meta, the board operates independently. It reviewed the Biden video case in October after receiving a complaint from a user regarding a modified seven-second video of the president shared on Meta’s primary social media platform.
The ruling issued on Monday is the initial one to discuss Meta’s “manipulated media” policy, which prohibits certain forms of falsified videos, amidst growing apprehensions regarding the possible misuse of emerging AI technologies to influence this year’s elections.
