As Investors Prepare for the Fed’s Favoured Inflation Indicator, the S&P 500 Closes Barely Altered

The S&P 500 managed to barely gain ground on Thursday as investors anticipated the release of new inflation data that could provide guidance on when the Federal Reserve will start reducing interest rates.

At 5,482.87, the broad market index ended the day 0.09 percent ahead.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 39,164.06, up 36.26 points, or 0.09%, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.3% to settle at 17,858.68.

Prominent semiconductor companies had a decline, prompting concerns about the artificial intelligence industry’s ability to support markets over the latter part of this year.

After the chipmaker released fourth-quarter revenue projection that was in line with estimates, Micron’s stock fell more than 7%.

Nvidia, a market leader and powerhouse in semiconductors, also faltered, falling 1.9%.
