CME Introduces Futures Contracts as AI Computing Power Emerges as a Tradeable Asset Class

Computing power is rapidly gaining recognition as a new tradable asset class. CME Group is preparing to launch its first futures contracts based on the cost of operating the hardware that drives artificial intelligence.

In partnership with Silicon Data, the exchange plans to introduce two compute futures contracts on October 5th, subject to regulatory approval. This development will allow companies and investors to trade and hedge the price of AI computing capacity, similar to how they trade commodities like oil and electricity.

“Previously, two companies purchasing the same GPU capacity could face vastly different costs with no way to compare prices,” said Carmen Li, CEO of Silicon Data. “These compute futures will provide a benchmark for the market a public, tradable reference price for the resources that power every AI system.”
