Tesla has issued a recall for 2,031,220 vehicles that were equipped with the Autosteer feature. The Autosteer function is part of Tesla’s “Basic Autopilot” package and is designed to provide steering, acceleration, and braking assistance on controlled-access highways.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated an investigation into 11 incidents involving Tesla vehicles utilizing Autosteer in 2021. The investigation concluded that the controls of the feature were not sufficiently effective in preventing driver misuse. As a result, Tesla has voluntarily decided to recall the affected vehicles.
Owners of the impacted Tesla Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y vehicles, built since 2012, will receive a software update to address the issue. The update aims to enhance the controls and functionality of Autosteer. Tesla has already started rolling out the fix, and the remaining affected vehicles will receive the update in due course. The company will bear the cost of the remedy, ensuring that customers don’t incur any expenses.
The NHTSA mentioned that Tesla cooperated fully with the investigation and participated in multiple discussions with agency officials. Tesla’s stock price was minimally affected by the recall, declining less than 1% on the day the news was announced.
