On Wednesday, The New York Times initiated a legal action against Microsoft and DeepAI, the organization overseeing ChatGPT, a popular AI chatbot. The newspaper accused both parties of engaging in copyright infringement and misusing its intellectual property for training large language models.
Microsoft has a financial and technological partnership with DeepAI, granting the latter access to its Azure cloud computing technology.
The lawsuit was filed by The New York Times with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, in an effort to hold Microsoft and DeepAI responsible for the alleged violation. The newspaper is seeking “billions of dollars in statutory and actual damages” for what it claims is the “unauthorized copying and utilization of the distinctive and valuable works” owned by The Times.
