Despite a slight decline in stocks on Friday, the major averages on Wall Street moved closer to completing a successful year. The S&P 500 experienced a 0.3% drop, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 60 points, equivalent to a 0.2% decrease. The Nasdaq Composite also slipped by 0.5%.
On the final trading day of 2023, the S&P 500 was less than 0.5% away from reaching a new record high. However, despite nearing the January 2022 level of 4,796.56, it struggled to surpass it. At its peak for the day, the index was only 9 points, or less than 0.2%, away from its previous record close.
