OpenAI and Oracle are officially starting the construction of their new $16 billion Stargate campus in Saline Township, Michigan, with a special groundbreaking ceremony held on Monday.
This project involves building a large data center, which is a facility used to store and manage huge amounts of digital information. Construction began about three months ago, and one of the buildings is nearly finished on the outside.
The Stargate project is part of a larger effort to develop advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the United States.
Back in January 2025, a high-profile event was held at the White House where important leaders, including the President, OpenAI’s CEO, and top executives from other major companies, announced plans to invest a total of $500 billion over four years to build new AI infrastructure across the country.
At that time, the CEO of OpenAI also shared that the company was considering investments totaling around $1.4 trillion over the next eight years, which includes projects like Stargate.
However, as OpenAI prepares for potential plans to become a publicly traded company, it has now shared a more cautious approach.
The company is aiming to spend about $600 billion on computing power and AI development by the year 2030.
