A new account type with built-in privacy limits that allow parents more control will soon be automatically assigned to teenagers using Instagram.
With the intention of putting all teenagers, even those who could try to mislead about their age, into private accounts that can only be messaged, tagged, or discussed by people they already follow, Meta, the parent company of the social networking platform, will start rolling out its “teen accounts” feature on Tuesday.
This is Instagram’s biggest step yet to control the platform’s usage by minors. The feature is the most recent initiative from Meta to address concerns about child safety on all of its platforms.
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, expressed regret to parents who claimed Instagram played a role in their children’s exploitation or suicides during a Senate online child safety hearing in January.
