On Thursday, the head of the European regulatory body, Thierry Breton, sent a harsh letter to TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew, alleging that his agency had “indications” that the platform is being used to disseminate false information and unlawful content regarding the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
The European Commission’s internal market commissioner is Breton. Since adolescents frequently use the network as a source of news, he emphasised that TikTok must be “timely, diligent, and objective” while eradicating false material.
Breton sent such letters this week to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, and Elon Musk, owner of X.
Breton wrote in the letter, “First, given that your platform is frequently used by children and teenagers, you have a special responsibility to protect them from violent content depicting hostage taking and other graphic videos that are reportedly widely circulating on your platform, without appropriate safeguards.
TikTok is required to monitor and delete illegal information including terrorist content or unlawful hate speech under the recently passed Digital Services Act in the European Union. TikTok must also explain its procedures for doing this.
A corporation could be fined 6% of its yearly turnover if it doesn’t follow the rules set forth by the European Union regarding the use of illicit content.
TikTok was urged to increase its efforts and get in touch with the appropriate law enforcement agencies by Breton. He requested a 24-hour response to his letter from Chew.
