As investors braced themselves for expected remarks later this week from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, the S&P 500 gave up some territory on Thursday following a recent surge.
The broad index fell 0.2%, moving away from trading near the all-time intraday high that was reached in July.
Both the Nasdaq Composite and the Dow Jones Industrial Average had losses of 0.5% and 32 8 points, respectively.
