Thursday’s S&P 500 Ends Largely Unchanged Following a Hotter-Than-Expected Inflation Data

Stocks finished Thursday with minimal gains as the latest inflation data revealed a slight uptick in consumer prices for December.

The Nasdaq Composite held steady, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average managed to climb approximately 15 points or 0.04%. Conversely, the S&P 500 experienced a slight decrease of 0.07%. At one point during the day, the S&P 500 briefly surpassed its previous closing high of 4,796.56.

According to the consumer price index report for December, consumer prices rose by 0.3%, slightly exceeding expectations, resulting in an annual rate of 3.4%. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had initially projected a 0.2% increase for December and a 3.2% increase on a year-over-year basis.
