With the S&P 500 Less Than 1% Higher, the Stock Market’s Relief Surge Wanes

Tuesday afternoon, as President Donald Trump’s tariff deadline drew closer, the S&P 500 gave up much of its previous gains.

Last time, the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.4% and the broad market index gained 0.4%.

283 points, or 0.7%, were added to the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq had both risen more than 4%, and the 30-stock Dow had soared almost 3.9%, but the major averages were still far from their session highs.

Hopes that the United States could strike agreements that would decrease tariffs on major trading partners earlier caused equities to rise in a relief bounce.
