Taiwan Should Foot the Bill for US Defence, TSMC’s Shares Plummet

Declaring that Taiwan “doesn’t give us anything,” former US President Donald Trump—who is running for reelection to the White House—said he believes Taiwan should pay for its defence.

As part of an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek that was released on Tuesday, he was asked if he would defend Taiwan against China.

His response was to that question. Since reunification with the mainland was once described as “a historical inevitability,” Beijing has viewed democratically administered Taiwan as a part of its territory.

“We should be paid by Taiwan for defence,” declared Trump. We are rather similar to an insurance firm, you know.

None of it comes from Taiwan,” he continued. President Trump seemed to associate his remarks with Taiwan’s semiconductor industry, one of the biggest sophisticated globally. About all of our semiconductor business was taken over by Taiwan.
