Google is restructuring its AI divisions, with chief scientist Jeff Dean leaving the company after 27 years. Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, is transitioning to a chairman role at DeepMind and will also serve as chief scientist for Alphabet.
Following the announcement, Alphabet’s shares declined approximately 4%.
Dean, a pioneer in artificial intelligence credited with key technical breakthroughs at Google, is launching his own company in partnership with Google senior fellow Sanjay Ghemawat.
The departure is amicable, and Google has announced plans to invest in his new venture.
