Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has announced that Sam Altman, the former CEO of OpenAI, will be joining the company to head a new advanced AI research division.
Along with other colleagues, Nadella announced on the social media platform X that Altman and former OpenAI President and Board Chair Greg Brockman will be joining Microsoft to head a new advanced AI research team.
Microsoft, a major player in technology, closely collaborates on technology with OpenAI and has made billion-dollar investments in the company.
“We’re eager to get started on giving them the tools they need to succeed,” Nadella remarked.
“With everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, we can continue to develop. We also have faith in our product roadmap, our capacity to assist our customers and partners, and our cooperation with OpenAI.”
With the slightly ominous remark, “The mission continues,” Altman himself reposted Nadella’s message.
Altman took over as the company’s CEO in 2019. The board of OpenAI declared late on Friday that it was firing Altman and temporarily installing technical head Mira Murati in his place. According to the post, Altman “did not always communicate with the board in a truthful manner.”
Despite this, several OpenAI investors persisted in their efforts to reinstate Altman as CEO during the weekend.
Emmett Shear, the former CEO of Twitch, will lead OpenAI, the artificial intelligence startup, the firm said late on Sunday night. In a matter of hours, Nadella declared that the Microsoft team will internally absorb Altman and Brockman, who had both resigned from the firm and been stripped of his chairmanship on Friday.
