Altman Recounts Musk’s OpenAI Dispute, Claims Nonprofit was ‘Abandoned’

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman testified on Tuesday in the Musk v. Altman trial, asserting that he did not steal a charity, but that Elon Musk abandoned one.

Wearing a blue suit and tie, Altman testified for about four hours in federal court in Oakland, California.

He stated that Musk, co-founder of OpenAI in 2015, failed to fulfill promises and ultimately deserted the startup as it faced an uncertain future.

“We were kind of left for dead,” Altman testified.

Musk sued OpenAI, Altman, and the company’s president, Greg Brockman, in 2024, claiming they reneged on their promise to keep OpenAI a nonprofit and adhere to its charitable mission.

Musk argued that the approximately $38 million he donated was used for unauthorized commercial purposes.

Altman testified on Tuesday that he never made any commitments to Musk regarding OpenAI’s corporate structure.
