As UK Government Borrowing Costs Decline, European Markets Slightly Rise

Wednesday saw greater trading in European markets as investors responded to a lower-than-expected U.K. inflation figure and awaited U.S. inflation data that will help the Fed decide whether to lower interest rates.

Soon after the opening bell, the majority of sectors and all major bourses were in positive territory, and the pan-European Stoxx 600 was up about 0.4% during early trading.

After official data revealed that U.K. inflation dropped to a lower-than-expected 2.5% in December, London’s FTSE 100 was up 0.6% at 9:05 a.m. London time. Reuters polled economists who had predicted the reading would not move from the November 2.6% print.

The U.S. consumer inflation index is expected to be released at 8:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday, and it will be the main focus of global markets.

The headline CPI increased 2.9% over the previous 12 months and by 0.3% on a monthly basis.
