Nearly every AT&T cellular network user had their call and text message logs stolen by hackers for six months, the firm announced on Friday.
Through an internal investigation, the company said in an SEC filing that it discovered in April that hackers had “unlawfully accessed and copied AT&T call logs” that were kept on a third-party cloud platform.
Records of calls and messages made on Jan. 2, 2023, and between about May 1 and October 31, 2022, are included in the data.
Phone numbers were included in the data, but the messages and call content was secure, and no personal information about the clients was accessed.
The magnitude of the intrusion highlights how much of a cybersecurity dilemma big company faces. The 2023 annual report from AT&T states that 127 million devices are linked to the company’s cellular network.
