As a public spat with Elon Musk over the nation’s decision to ban his social media business X intensifies, Brazil’s telecoms regulator threatens to impose fines against the billionaire’s satellite internet provider, Starlink.
Due to X’s failure to designate a legal representation by the stipulated deadline, as required by Brazilian law, the country’s supreme court last week ordered X to be suspended countrywide. A group of justices on the US supreme court upheld that decision on Monday.
In compliance with the court decision, internet service providers have been directed by Brazil’s telecoms regulator, Anatel, to disable access to X.
Coimbra stated that Anatel is investigating the possible noncompliance of Starlink and other network operators in a different interview with CNN Brasil on Monday.
If a corporation disobeys the court order to block X, the commissioner stated that various penalties could be applied, such as fines and the loss of the company’s licence to conduct business in Brazil.
