Graphic footage of kidnappings and military operations has been circulating on social media sites like X, formerly known as Twitter, since the beginning of this weekend’s Israel-Hamas confrontation. However, the platform’s distortion has made it more difficult for users to understand what’s happening in the area.
A video purporting to show Israeli airstrikes on Hamas in Gaza was among the posts that X identified as misleading or deceptive over the weekend. Thousands of users saw the posts, and the platform identified the most extensively shared ones as false. Nevertheless, scores of uploads with the exact same video and caption went unnoticed by X’s algorithm, per CNBC’s review.
Days after NBC News reported that X had downsized its misinformation and electoral integrity division, the patchwork enforcement was announced. Before Hamas launched its surprise attack, X deleted headlines from links, making it harder to distinguish between external connections and regular photographs uploaded on the network.
Twitter’s management had spent a lot of money battling false or manipulative content before Elon Musk bought the firm. Musk renamed the platform when he joined the helm and criticised the company’s prior collaboration with the US government on Covid-19 disinformation while also cutting manpower in teams devoted to fighting false material.
With Community Notes, a pre-existing tool formerly known as Birdwatch, X has prioritised user-driven content tagging under Musk. However, a September research from the EU discovered that, despite the function, which adds user-generated context to postings, misinformation was more easily discoverable on X than on any other social media site and garnered, on a relative basis, more engagement than on other platforms.
