Dow Closes at a Record High Above 40,000, Capping a Five-Week Winning Streak

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at an all-time high on Friday, surpassing the 40,000 mark for the first time in history. The milestone came just a day after the index reached this benchmark in the previous trading session.

The 30-stock average gained 134.21 points, or 0.34%, to close at 40,003.59. The S&P 500 index rose slightly, up 6.17 points, or 0.12%, to 5,303.27. The Nasdaq Composite, however, ended the day down 12.35 points, or 0.07%, at 16,685.97.

Leading the Dow’s gains were Walmart and Caterpillar, which both rose 1% to lead the pack. Chubb and Valero Energy were the biggest gainers in the S&P 500, with respective gains of over 3% and 4%.
