As investors exercised caution ahead of crucial jobs data on Friday that may influence the direction interest rates will take, stocks fell on Thursday.
128 points, or 0.4%, were lost by the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Losses for the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 were 0.5% and 0.6%, respectively.
Consumer staples, which were down 1.7% for the day, were the S&P 500’s worst-performing sector on Thursday after shares of Clorox fell 7.4% following its results report. The utilities industry lost 1.2% more ground as a result of the decrease. The most recent declines for AES and NextEra Energy were 5.5% and 3.6%, respectively.
