Nearly all AT&T cellular network customers had their call and text message records stolen by hackers six months ago, the firm announced on Friday.
This breach has the potential to expose millions of Americans’ private information.
Through an internal investigation, the company said in an SEC filing that it discovered in April that hackers had “unlawfully accessed and copied AT&T call logs” that were kept on a third-party cloud platform.
Between roughly May 1 and October 31, 2022, as well as on January 2, 2023, call and text records are included in the data.
Although phone numbers were included in the records, the privacy of the calls, messages, and customers was not breached.
When gathered and examined on a wide scale to uncover trends and connections among individuals, this type of data—often referred to as metadata—is deemed extremely sensitive.
