On Tuesday, Meta declared that it would transition to a “Community Notes” format, such to the one seen on Elon Musk’s platform X, and discontinue its third-party fact-checking program in an effort to “restore free expression.”
Community Notes will be created and assessed by active users to provide posts on its platforms additional context.
The function will be introduced in the United States in the coming months. This announcement is the latest effort by Meta to mend fences with Republican President-elect Donald Trump prior to his inauguration.
“We’ve reached a point where there are simply too many errors and too much censorship,” Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, stated in a video release on Tuesday.
“We’re going back to our roots and concentrate on minimising errors, streamlining our policies, and re-establishing free expression on our platforms because the recent elections also feel like a cultural tipping point towards once again prioritising speech.”
“Too politically biassed,” Zuckerberg claimed, the third-party fact checkers have “destroyed more trust than they’ve created, especially in the U.S.”
