Microsoft is Closing Skype After 21 Years of Operation. Here’s How Competitor Video Call Technology Outperformed It

The Skype app is shutting down.

The 21-year-old chat and calling service will be shut down in May, Microsoft said on Friday. The software provider is urging Skype users to switch to Teams, which is available for free.

Although Skype gained popularity in the 2000s for enabling free phone calls, it faltered in the mobile era and did not see a significant uptick in use during the epidemic. With so many alternative ways to phone and chat, some people have forgotten that it’s still available.

In a CNBC interview, Jeff Teper, head of Microsoft 365 collaborative apps and platforms, stated, “As we’ve evolved teams over the last seven to eight years, we’ve learnt a lot from Skype that we’ve put into Teams.”

“However, we believed that this was the right moment because, by concentrating on teams, we could make things easier for our clientele and the market and produce more innovation more quickly.”
