Microsoft’s President Claims that China is Catching Up to the West in Technology

The president and vice-chairman of Microsoft, the West shouldn’t assume that China is falling behind the United States and Europe in technological advancements.

Tensions between the United States and China have been centred on their competition for technological dominance in recent years, which has resulted in a number of export restrictions on vital technologies.

China’s Huawei shocked the world late last year when it unveiled a smartphone that was said to have 5G download speeds, leading to rumours of a chip breakthrough that evaded US tech sanctions.

During Tuesday’s Web Summit internet conference in Lisbon, Portugal, Microsoft’s Brad Smith told CNBC that China is “in many ways” on par with or even catching up to other countries in terms of technology.

“To be honest, I believe that one of the risks is that those who don’t visit China too frequently believe that they’re falling behind,” he said to Karen Tso of CNBC. “But when you visit, you’re amazed at how much they’re accomplishing.”  American and Chinese businesses would continue to compete on technology well into the future.

He also urged American and European businesses to work together in order to expand economies and introduce new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to the rest of the globe.
