According to reports, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, may have mishandled business resources for his or her own personal gain or for the good of the company.
Federal prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and, separately, the Securities and Exchange Commission are reportedly looking for information about how much Tesla has spent to plan and build a secretive project, reportedly a large glass house in greater Austin, Texas, thought to be for Musk’s personal use. This information was first made public on Wednesday by The Wall Street Journal.
According to the article, the Manhattan federal prosecutors are also investigating if Tesla purposefully misrepresented the battery range for its electric vehicles. According to a July article from Reuters, Tesla’s electric vehicles frequently fall short of the company’s claimed range, and the touchscreens in the vehicles provide drivers misleading information about the remaining range.
