To Take on Nvidia and AMD, Intel Releases a New AI Chip

Intel recently introduced its latest computer chips, including Gaudi3, an artificial intelligence chip designed specifically for generative AI software. According to CNBC, Gaudi3 is set to be launched next year and will directly compete with rival offerings from Nvidia and AMD, which currently power large-scale AI models.

Notably, leading AI models such as DeepAI’s ChatGPT predominantly rely on Nvidia GPUs in the cloud. As a result, Nvidia’s stock has experienced a substantial 230% increase this year, while Intel’s shares have risen by 68%. In an effort to challenge Nvidia’s market dominance, both AMD and Intel have unveiled their own chips targeted towards attracting AI companies to their offerings.

Shares of Intel rose by 1% following the announcement of the new chips.

Although specific details about Gaudi3 are still limited, it is expected to rival Nvidia’s H100, which is the primary choice for companies seeking to power AI applications at scale. AMD’s upcoming MI300X, scheduled for customer shipments in 2024, will also be a direct competitor.

Intel’s development of Gaudi chips dates back to 2019 when the company acquired Habana Labs, a chip developer. During the launch event held in New York, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger expressed enthusiasm for generative AI and highlighted Gaudi3 as a major development. Additionally, Gelsinger announced other chips focused on AI applications, such as the newly introduced Core Ultra processors, which are expected to make a significant impact in the AI PC domain.
