Stocks were almost flat on Tuesday as traders anticipated the end of a challenging August for the market.
The movements come after a successful Wall Street day, which has been rare in recent weeks. The Nasdaq increased by 0.8%, while the S&P 500 increased by 0.6%.
The Dow closed more than 200 points higher, or a gain of around 0.6%. The blue-chip average was buoyed during the day by 3M, which increased more than 5% after Bloomberg News cited sources suggesting the company was prepared to settle lawsuits alleging some of its earplugs were defective.
