Under Stringent Competition Laws, The EU Classifies Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, And Three Other Digital Firms As “Gatekeepers.”

The new Digital Markets Act, a stringent set of regulations that might disrupt the business models of significant digital platforms, was unveiled by the European Commission on Wednesday, designating six IT titans as “gatekeepers” under its provisions.

According to the Commission, Amazon, Alphabet, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, and ByteDance will have six months to bring their primary platform services in line with the DMA’s requirements.

The Commission declared that it views Microsoft, ByteDance of China, Apple, Alphabet, Meta, and Amazon as “gatekeepers.” Massive internet platforms are referred to by this phrase, and according to the EU, these platforms are preventing users from accessing essential platform features including messaging, communications, online search, and advertising.

A total of five fresh market investigations have been initiated by the bloc investigating the U.S. digital behemoths Apple and Microsoft to see whether or not some of their services should be considered gatekeepers.
